About

Hello, I’m Marcus Hoffmann, a physician and professor of health sciences. I am interested in how we experience our bodies and the role health and appearance play in our wellbeing. What do we want for ourselves? What do others expect of us? And what can medicine contribute?

When a study makes headlines, I take a closer look: What was actually investigated? How reliable are the findings? And what do they mean for everyday life? An interesting headline is not yet a helpful answer. I also practise this careful reading with my students.

In aesthetic medicine, these questions become particularly personal. A change may be medically possible and still miss what someone actually wants. For me, medical judgement therefore includes understanding what a person hopes to gain from a treatment — and explaining both its possibilities and its limitations clearly.

Our ideas of health and attractiveness are also shaped by social expectations. We are supposed to be healthy, look good and stay relaxed about it all. That can spur us on, but it can also put us under pressure. How strain and exhaustion are connected, and what helps people remain resilient, are particular interests in my university teaching.

I explore these questions in my podcast, on Instagram and LinkedIn, and in talks. I want to explain medical ideas clearly and help you understand what they mean for you personally. On DocHoffmann.com, you will find links to my work, whether you prefer to read or listen.

I’m glad you’re here!
